Western Mexico Key to Packaging & Processing Machinery Sales in Mexico

Guadalajara ranks second for packed food and beverage products; with strong showings in pharmaceutical, personal care, automotive, electronic industries

Reston, Va.; September 20, 2012 — Mexico has long been an important market for packaging machinery exports, importing up to 85 percent of all packaging machinery used — roughly US$429 million (US$600 million including secondary equipment) in 2011. The vast majority of that equipment — 70 percent — comes from Italy, Germany and the United States, and much of the demand is in western Mexico.

“Overall, Mexico imports somewhere between 80 and 85 percent of its packaging machinery, making it a great opportunity for manufacturers on the international stage,” says Jorge Izquierdo, vice president of market development, PMMI. “The western states, especially Jalisco, are especially important. Jalisco is second only to Mexico City in food and beverage production.”

“Packaging Machinery Demand in Western Mexico,” a brief market report published by PMMI this summer, supports that assertion. The report notes that the western states of Mexico (Aguascalientes, Colima, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacán and Nayarit), which are home to 27 percent of Mexican manufacturing, show higher gross domestic product (GDP) growth than the rest of the nation, and are home to more than 20 million.

Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco and the host city for PMMI’s upcoming EXPO PACK Guadalajara, ranks third among Mexican cities for GDP and second for population. Guadalajara, the report notes, is one of the most profitable investment destinations in Mexico. The city’s ongoing industrial and economic growth make it that much more appealing, and EXPO Guadalajara, the venue for the show, is the largest convention center in Latin America.

Western Mexico Facts:

  • Jalisco calls itself the birthplace of tequila, but no matter where tequila was born, this state is home to the US$1.3 billion tequila industry. Its 160 registered tequila manufacturing facilities include 20 of the largest tequila producers in the world.
  • Jalisco is also regarded as the “Silicon Valley of Mexico,” and is home to 42 percent of the country’s electronics manufacturing.
  • Jalisco is the second-largest pharmaceutical producer in the country.
  • Agribusiness is particularly big business in western Mexico. Jalisco is Mexico’s agricultural leader and the second largest food and beverage producer, behind Mexico City. Frozen foods also have a strong presence in Jalisco, processed food in Guanajuato and candy in Jalisco.
  • Colima is home to a number of bottling facilities, including Embotelladora de Colima, a regional Coke bottler, and rival PepsiCo’s facility in Michoacán.

PMMI will debut EXPO PACK Guadalajara at EXPO Guadalajara, the largest convention center in Mexico, February 27–March 1, 2013.   This new regional exhibition will provide direct access to manufacturers from the important commercial area of Western Mexico.

PMMI will also host EXPO PACK México 2013, the premier show for packaging and processing technology for Mexico and Central America in Mexico City, June 18-21, 2013. In addition to now organizing two shows in Mexico, PMMI has also strengthened its commitment to Mexican packagers and processors by launching PMT en Español, an online, Spanish-language version of PMT magazine and PMMI has expanded membership in all categories to qualified Mexican companies.
