Arlington, VA, September 27, 2006 - Four outstanding packaging professionals will be inducted into the 2006 Packaging Hall of Fame™ during ceremonies at the Hyatt McCormick Hotel immediately after the close of PACK EXPO International 2006 on Tuesday, October 31, 2006. For the past 35 years, a select number of career packaging professionals have been inducted into the Packaging Hall of Fame in recognition of significant contributions they made in advancing the packaging industry. There have been 136 individuals inducted into the Hall of Fame since 1971, including four who were selected for the Class of 2006:
Proceeds from the event will be used for the design and construction of a permanent Packaging Hall of Fame memorial, to be housed at Michigan State University’s School of Packaging. Each inductee and their accomplishments in the packaging industry will be honored with the Michigan State University memorial. The memorial will be constructed in phases, beginning with a wall display in a central location in the School of Packaging. The final structure will also feature computers with searchable information on each of the Packaging Hall of Fame inductees, including biographical information and in-depth research on packaging achievements and advancements over the past few decades. Each year, any industry professional may nominate a candidate. Qualified nominees for the Packaging Hall of Fame should be career packaging professionals – living or deceased – who, in the course of their packaging careers:
Packaging Hall of Fame nominees are reviewed and inductees selected by a Packaging Hall of Fame Commission, comprised of representatives from various sectors of the packaging supply chain. This year’s Commission consists of:

Packaging Hall of Fame™ Class of 2006 Edward Bauer Now retired as Director of Global Packaging for Bausch and Lomb, Ed Bauer was previously Senior Director of Packaging Services for American Home Products/Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories; Director of Package Engineering and Development for Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories; Director, Packaging Technology for Campbell’s Soup; and Product Manager for Glidden Coating and before that, Mobil coatings. He and his groups have won three Dupont Awards including the first Diamond award. While at Ross they won two IoPP Ameristar Awards for the Hospital Infant Formula Packaging. While at Bausch and Lomb, he developed the design and qualification of a PET bottle for contact lens solutions, new closures for contact lens products, packaging for vitamins worldwide (Ocuvite/Preservision), and the development of packaging for a drug delivery implant for eye disease. Edward Church Edward A. Church is currently the Executive Director of the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA). He has successfully led ISTA, the only association dedicated to the specific concerns of transport packaging, to unprecedented US and international growth, presence, recognition and contribution, including the establishment of the ISTA-China this year. Mr. Church’s packaging professional career began more than 38 years ago with a Bachelor and Master in Packaging degree at Michigan State University. He co-founded and managed Lansmont Corporation, a world leader in the design and manufacture of package testing equipment. He was a participant in the innovation and development of Damage Boundary Theory and Product Fragility testing, Method of Testing Shock Absorbing Characteristics that led the ASTM D 4168 Test Method and had intensive participation in the development of the current 14 ISTA Test Procedures for Transport Packaging. Mark C. Garvey (posthumously) Mark Garvey was head of a small family-owned packaging machinery business who contributed a great deal as a volunteer leader in the packaging community. Mark served the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute in many roles including Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the PMMI Show and Education committees and participated on countless working groups as a long time member of PMMI. His efforts have led to the creation of the PMMI member employee scholarship, the Claude Breeden Scholarship and the C. Glenn Davis scholarship. His company was a long time financial supporter of the Packaging Education Forum, and has a track record of donating money and assistance to a broad array of packaging organizations. From a technical perspective, Garvey Corporation is well known in the industry and recognized as a market leader. The company’s accumulators and conveyor systems serve the full array of high speed automated packaging lines at leading consumer goods companies. Garvey has served as a leading voice in thruput and copyrighted certain intellectual property concerning measuring throughput, all of which can be found at www.thruput.com. Career highlights include:

Dr. Bruce Harte During his tenure as the Director of the Michigan State University School of Packaging, Dr. Harte continually enhanced the reputation and capabilities of the Department through his ongoing efforts to develop and expand his personal and professional relationships within the industry. He has strengthened the ties between the School, its Alumni, Students and Supporters through programs such as the Consortia and the Industry Advisory Committee. Through these activities, he sought, obtained and applied input and advice from outside the School regarding curricula, resources, recruiting and nearly all facets of maintaining the premier Packaging Education program in the world. His distinguished packaging career spans over 27 years of service to Michigan State University and packaging education worldwide. As Director of the MSU School of Packaging for over 10 years (1993-2004), Dr. Harte led the MSU School of Packaging through the most productive period in the school's history, inspiring the faculty to do great things.
