Spotlight on . . . Optel Vision, U.S. Bottlers Machinery Co. and Sidel Inc.
By Laura P.T. Johnston
Whether a company is searching for solutions to recurring problems, a way to develop an entirely new approach to training or a marketable endorsement for the service they already provide with the brand of the leading train-the-trainer program in the packaging industry, many are finding the Certified Trainer Program a valuable asset in their inventory of services. PMMI asked Optel Vision, U.S. Bottlers Machinery Co. and Sidel Inc. to explain why they sought the program out and what they hope to gain from it.
Optel Vision
Optel Vision, a provider of packaging line inspection systems in Quebec City, Canada, joined the ranks of companies involved in the PMMI Certified Trainer Program in October with the certification of its team of fourteen installation field engineers. “Optel Vision is committed to providing the best service to its customer base,” says Nancy Houley, vice president of marketing and business development. “Providing high quality training that is geared toward bringing improved efficiency and productivity in the use of our systems was a natural fit to our objective of lowering the cost of ownership.”
Prior to participating in the Certified Trainer Workshop, the installation field engineers had training on the Optel Vision equipment and installation procedures. What challenged them was providing truly thorough training – answering questions satisfactorily and ensuring that customers got all the information they needed to operate the system. When customers began requesting better training and Optel Vision learned of PMMI’s program, it was considered a logical step to meeting these needs.
U.S. Bottlers Machinery Co.
U.S. Bottlers Machinery Co. is another company to have recently taken part in the program, naming two certified trainers in October. The Charlotte, N.C.-based liquid packaging machinery manufacturer was seeking a way to perfect the focus and method of training on their equipment. Shawn Weeks, field service engineer for U.S. Bottlers, said that before attending the Certified Trainer Workshop, training different types of people and overcoming language barriers was a definite obstacle. “I learned different tools to train all types of personalities, making the training easier,” he explains. “This has completely changed the way I train customers. What we learned by going to this course will forever change how U.S. Bottlers trains future customers.”
Sidel Inc.
A third company to have newly-certified personnel, Sidel Inc. of Laval, Quebec, Canada had a slightly different reason for seeking certification for its trainers. PMMI’s Certified Trainer Program, a recognizable institution to customers within the industry, was viewed as a promotional asset to Sidel. “We already had in place a strong background in training clients,” said Robert Nantel, technical training manager for the global packaging machinery manufacturer for beverages, “what we were seeking from the program was to make our customers more comfortable with the standard of our training.” In addition to confirming the ways Sidel trains, “the program provided helpful statistics and information on how people learn new skills,” stated Nantel. Training is taken very seriously by Sidel, as it factors largely into the RAM (Reliability, Accessibility and Maintainability) approach they take in designing, manufacturing and installing their equipment. The Certified Trainer Program was a way for Sidel to ensure that the RAM program was being satisfactorily supported by their training methods and to market to their customers “world-class training.”
To see how their Certified Trainers develop, improve and market their methods, Training Today will follow up with them in 2008.
