Spotlight on Massman Automation Designs, LLC
By Laura P.T. Johnston

At Massman Automation Designs, LLC, the Villard, MN-based automated machinery designer and manufacturer, employee training experience and product knowledge were never lacking. What prompted the company to participate in PMMI’s Certified Trainer Program was a desire to streamline information—to ensure that the information in the manual matched the instruction given during training on the plant floor, which ultimately met the real-time production needs on the line.

Though the participants in the Certified Trainer Program had expansive training experience in the field and internally, none had previously participated in an organized training program. Mike Roth, electrical controls manager at Massman, described the five main objectives of the group: “We wanted a formal methodology to develop a professional training program. We wanted to ensure Massman is utilizing the current best known industry practices for training and we wanted to take advantage of PMMI developed and proven training tools. The third party consultation setting allowed the different department representatives that participated in the training to "think and consider" beyond the walls of Massman. And of course, all of these things contribute to Massman's continuation of providing world class customer training and support.”

According to Roth, Massman sent a manual technical writer, a very experienced mechanical technician/field service representative and a very experienced electrical controls technician/field service representative to attend the training. Each of these departments came away with a concrete method for streamlining information. “Sometimes the manual did not always correlate with what our customers were being trained in the field,” Roth said, “the manual, mechanical and electrical departments are now much more consistent with information and training being provided to the customer. Training tools and aids have been developed which not only help Massman's quality of training but also internally with our own technicians.”

Meeting customer expectations from the outset is another area in which Massman was able to improve with the help of the program. “A customer almost always needs to know how much time and what kinds of resources (classroom time, machine time, non-production time, production time, materials, etc.) are necessary for training. The PMMI training provided great ideas and tools to ensure this information is exchanged in an efficient, organized manner.” For customers requiring formal training guideline procedures, the Certified Trainer Program has provided Massman with the ability to deliver them automatically. “The training tools developed during the class have been the most beneficial, along with improved training consistency,” stated Roth. “Massman has a tradition of being commended for their level of training providence and the PMMI involvement has enhanced our tradition.”
