Spotlight on Bosch Packaging’s Doboy division
By Laura P.T. Johnston
Bosch Packaging’s Doboy division has developed a revolutionary, modular approach to technical training. The New Richmond, WI-based packaging machinery manufacturer’s ‘dashboard’ training is a CD-ROM based module that allows Doboy to tailor a training program to meet the specific needs of a customer based on the equipment they have purchased. Using training tools provided in the PMMI Certified Trainer Program, the computer-generated ‘dashboard’ provides a menu of system and machine information, including training files, instruction manuals, parts files, electrical schematics and manufacturer’s literature. This resource system serves in tandem with Doboy’s PMMI Certified Trainers to deliver a truly unique and effective training experience. In fact, “many customers have actually cited this aspect as a deciding reason for their purchase,” according to Doboy.
In most cases, the customer is first introduced to the training module when visiting for a design review or to take a look at the equipment. Customers are often surprised to be offered a tailored training program, said Bruce Johnson, senior training specialist at Doboy. “They often expect to see maybe a general outline with a basic, informal approach,” he adds. If the customer does not learn of the ‘dashboard’ prior to purchase, it is an added value at the factory acceptance test. After purchase, Doboy’s trainers conduct a needs assessment with the customer, determining the skill set of the trainees, defining the scope of job tasks, determining numbers to be trained and the scope of materials to be developed. A schedule for training is set up and the formal training is conducted either onsite or at Doboy’s facility. Evaluations are submitted by trainees and feedback is provided to the customer based on those evaluations. Lastly, a follow-up assessment is done to ensure the trainee has the tools to meet customer expectations and to plan any future training sessions. Each training module on the customer’s selected ‘dashboard’ is developed in a PowerPoint format, then merged and converted into a PDF document on CD Media for the customer upon completion of training.
For customers with a strong safety focus, Doboy offers the addition of any specific safety devices special to the project to their universal safety module. For customers seeking a long-term relationship with the manufacturer, Johnson explains that it is normal for Doboy to follow up with different levels of training after the initial session. “We also use the modular objective outline as an assessment tool for future training. This will help us focus the training in areas of need,” he explains.
The Certified Trainer Program has “[had] a great impact on our process and delivery,” Johnson says. “We have taken ideas and tools and implemented them into our every day development and delivery,” he explains. In conjunction with the unique ‘dashboard’ method, the growing number of Certified Trainers at Doboy has resulted in higher marks in customer evaluations. Ultimately, the PMMI Certified Training Programs offered by Doboy help to reduce downtime, increase throughput, reduce operator and maintenance learning curve and increase the life of the machine, according to Doboy, Inc. “[The Certified Trainer Program] is a great program that will continue to grow and be highly recognized as an industry standard,” Johnson says.
