Proper Lockout/Tagout Procedures Keep Employees Safe and Ensure Safety Compliance

Lockout/tagout refers to specific practices and procedures to safeguard employees from the accidental or unexpected activation of machinery and equipment, or the release of hazardous energy during service or maintenance activities. OSHA’s regulation 29 CFR Part 1910.147 states that any machine with more than one energy source must have a machine-specific procedure. Specifically: “Procedures shall be developed, documented and utilized for the control of potentially hazardous energy when employees are engaged in the activities covered by this section.”

Training Is More Than Show-and-Tell

A-B-C Packaging Machine Corp.’s experience with the PMMI Certified Trainer Program is a tale of finding the best solutions to the challenges of staying on the cutting edge of training in today’s packaging machinery industry. “At one point, all of A-B-C Packaging’s service staff were Certified Trainers,” explains Eric Dederichs, assistant service manager at A-B-C Packaging. However, many suffered qualification losses when the customer feedback and Webinar assignments required for recertification proved unobtainable. These obstacles are not new; both OEM service techs and end user machine operators work tight, busy schedules, and finding the time to complete necessary assignments and provide necessary feedback can be a challenge.
