Mexico’s packaging machinery market is dominated by imports, which satisfy from 80% to 85% of the total demand. In 2008, U.S. packaging machinery exports to Mexico reached $121 million. Researchers anticipate a modest, but positive, increase of about 2 percent growth in total packaging machinery imports for 2009.
Processed Food
- CANAINCA (the Mexican Association for Processed Food) reported 4-5 percent growth in the processed food industry during 2008 and is projecting the same growth for 2009.
- The food industry is the largest packaging machinery buyer in Mexico representing 40% of purchases.
- According to the Mexico’s ministry of commerce, more than 30,000 companies manufacture food products in Mexico.
- Mexico’s food industry is a mix of large international food manufacturers, large Mexican food companies and small to medium sized companies producing niche and regional products.
Beverage
- México is the second largest market for soft drink products and bottled water in the world.
- According to the INEGI (Instituto Nacional de Estadisticas y Geografia ), Mexicans spend, on average, 10% of their income on beverages.

- The Mexican beverage Market is projected to grow 0.9% for 2009.*
- Specific growth sectors projected for the Mexican Beverage industry are specialty beverages such as tea, functional beverages and soy beverages.
Pharmaceutical
- Mexico is the largest producer of Pharmaceuticals in Latin America and the ninth largest producer in the world.
- Pharmaceutical production in Mexico is projected to retract in 2009, however 2.7% growth is projected for 2010 - 2012.*
- Investments in new equipment and modernization projects exceeded US$9.4 million in 2008.
- Mexico is also the second most important pharmaceutical market in the region, behind Brazil.
