Scholarships

PMMI Scholarships

Each year the PMMI Foundation provides $100,000 in scholarships to students majoring in packaging at more than 25 U.S. colleges, universities and technical schools that partner with PMMI. Students must currently attend a PMMI Partner School to be eligible for our scholarships.

Since our scholarship program was established in 1998, the PMMI Foundation has given more than $1.5 million.

Accepting applications from STUDENTS

The PACK EXPO Scholarship is the beneficiary of PMMI’s PACK Gives Back events at PACK EXPO International and PACK EXPO Las Vegas.  The scholarship provides six $5,000 scholarships for students attending partner schools.  “This scholarship program demonstrates PMMI’s continued commitment to foster our industry’s future workforce” says Jim Pittas, chief operating officer, PMMI.  The winners will be announced at the PACK Gives Back event at PACK EXPO.

Criteria:

  • Currently attending a PMMI Partner School
  • At least a 3.0 GPA
  • Area of study: Engineering, packaging, processing, mechatronics, or related field
  • Have a minimum of one semester remaining (beginning in the Fall) 
  • Financial need

To apply:

  • Complete the application.
  • Write a 500-1,000 word essay describing your interest in the packaging field and your career goals.
  • Obtain your transcripts from a PMMI Partner School, indicating your current GPA and extracurricular involvement (see Criteria).
  • Obtain a faculty recommendation with signature.
  • Create a PDF containing your 1) completed application, 2) essay, 3) transcripts, and 4) recommendation, and email to Jill Davis, Education Program Coordinator, at jdavis@pmmi.org. Or mail a hardcopy of your application materials to: Attn: Jill Davis, PMMI Education & Workforce Development, 11911 Freedom Drive, Suite 600, Reston, VA 20190.
  • Established in memory of former president and CEO of Dorner Manufacturing Corporation, a PMMI Member Company. According to Chuck Yuska, PMMI president and CEO, “Rich had passion for learning how things get done and for being fully engaged. That made him a valuable, active leader in the industry, PMMI, and its community.”
  • $2,000

  • Criteria:

             * Currently attending a PMMI Partner School
             * At least a 3.0 GPA
             * Major in packaging engineering or related field
             * Demonstrated commitment to excellence in the packaging industry
             * Demonstrated extracurricular involvement, such as athletics
             * Financial need

  • To apply:

  • Established in honor of a longtime employee at Enercon Industries, a longtime PMMI Member Company that supplies induction cap sealers and corona treatment systems. Bill Zito contributed much to the industry and PMMI and strongly believed in education.
  • $1,500.
  • Biennial. 2018 application deadline: May 31, 2018.
  • Winner selected by Enercon Industries
  • Criteria:

             * Currently attending a PMMI Partner School
             * At least a 3.0 GPA
             * Major in packaging engineering or related field
             * Demonstrated commitment to excellence in the packaging industry
             * Demonstrated extracurricular involvement, such as athletics
             * Financial need

Accepting applications from SCHOOLS

These are 3 separate scholarships:

Claude S. Breeden Scholarship is given in memory of former executive director of PMMI and a member of the 1991 class of the PMMI Packaging Hall of Fame.

Glenn Davis Scholarship is given in memory of former PMMI director of technical education who developed many of the self-instructional publications that continue to form the core of education and workforce development at PMMI.  

Art Schaefer Scholarship has been established by the Schaefer family in memory of the former president of New Jersey Machine and industry leader.

  • Scholarships are awarded to students in PMMI Partner community colleges and technical schools that train mechanics and technicians to work with packaging machinery
  • Scholarship amounts vary each year, depending on the number of school applications received and need.

  • Criteria:
    • Currently enrolled in a 2-year program at a PMMI Partner School
    • Satisfactory academic performance
    • Plans for a career in packaging machinery manufacturing
    • Financial need

  • PMMI provides scholarships to students at PMMI Partner Schools who wish to attend PACK EXPO, our annual and largest trade show held in Chicago on even years and Las Vegas on odd years.
  • Note:
    • Scholarship amounts vary each year, depending on the number of school applications received and need.
    • Preference is given to schools with students participating in the Amazing Packaging Race, a popular student contest at PACK EXPO.
    • Funds must be used for student travel to PACK EXPO only. The maximum awarded to each student is $200.
  • Email your school’s travel scholarship needs and the names of students attending PACK EXPO to PMMI, Attn: Jill Davis, Education & Workforce Development, 11911 Freedom Drive, Suite 600, Reston, VA 20190. 

Other Scholarships

  • Established in memory of former president and CEO of the Garvey Corporation, a PMMI Member Company. Mark Garvey was a past chairman of PMMI and a long-time supporter of packaging education. He gave significant time and effort to technical schools in the United States and Canada.
  • $2,500
  • Each fall, the Garvey Family awards the scholarship to one PMMI Partner School that demonstrates a commitment to excellence in the packaging industry. The school selects a student to receive the award, following this criteria:

               * At least a 3.0 GPA
               * Major in packaging engineering or related field
               * Demonstrated commitment to excellence in the packaging industry
               * Demonstrated extracurricular involvement, such as athletics
               * Financial need

  • There is no application or deadline for this scholarship.

Packaging World’s Future Leaders in Packaging Scholarship was established in 2011 in conjunction with Leaders in Packaging – a print and online marketing program that enables suppliers to promote their innovation and expertise to the packaging community.

The David A. Harvey Memorial Scholarship was established to encourage and support the growth of careers in industrial automation.
