The Rise of Eco-Friendly Packaging in India
In 2018 the government of Maharashtra and 20 other states in India issued a statewide antipollution ban on plastics—including the manufacturing, use, sale, distribution and storage of plastic materials such as bags, spoons, plates and more.
Packaging companies who didn’t follow the new initiative would be faced with penalties, including small fines below US $75 and US $150 for first and second-time offenders. Repeat offenders would pay larger fines of US $350 and an additional three-month jail sentence.
How did the plastic ban affect the Indian packaging industry? Since the ban, plastic associations and packaging companies have seen estimated losses of US $2 billion and 300,000 jobs. In addition, many food companies are transitioning towards eco-friendly packaging. Recyclability, reusability, waste reduction, compostable and biodegradable packaging now receive priority.
