Mobile Packaging Machinery Training and Service System

Need:

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) needed to create a combination service and training system for people working on modern packaging equipment. This system uses a rolling toolbox for portability and a selection of mechanical, electrical and measuring equipment suited to packaging equipment. The mobile nature of this system allows it to be used on campus or at off-campus sites.

Action:

Through the PMMI U Skills Fund, PNW received $6,715 to get the project started. Before equipping this system, PNW contacted packing service professionals for input into the type of equipment needed. The collaborative effort chose the following items:

  • Heavy-duty rolling toolbox with a large swivel vise.
  • Mechanical equipment including wrenches, sockets and screwdrivers.
  • Electrical equipment including a multi-meter, crimpers and a temperature sensing camera.
  • Measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers and an indicator.

Result:

PNW’s Mechatronics Engineering Technology program, the first of its kind specifically geared to the needs of the packaging industry, created this service. As completed, the Mobile Packaging Machinery Training and Service System meets the needs of service professionals working in the area of packaging machinery maintenance and setup. The included equipment is all industrial quality, as seen in most plants and should serve the needs of PNW for years to come.
