2026 The Ripple Effect: CPG Sustainability and the New OEM Spec Sheet

Published:

2026 End User Sustainability Initiatives Impact on OEMs, published by PMMI – The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies in June 2026, examines how consumer, retailer, and regulatory sustainability pressures are cascading upstream to reshape OEM requirements, drawing on a March–April 2026 quantitative survey and follow-up qualitative interviews. The analysis indicates three interrelated focus areas—material transitions and equipment compatibility, regulatory fragmentation and EPR-driven market variability, and reporting/audit preparedness and data transparency—and generally shows a growing need for earlier OEM–CPG collaboration, modular upgrade paths, and embedded monitoring. Charts highlight widening gaps between CPG ambitions and current machinery capabilities, including lightweighting, increased PCR content, and elimination of secondary packaging. Download the full report to see where engineering teams are prioritizing investments to strengthen operational resilience.

Questions This Report Answers

  • How do sustainable packaging materials like PCR and lightweight films impact machinery performance and line efficiency?
  • Why should CPG companies involve equipment manufacturers during early stage packaging design and capital planning?
  • What challenges do fragmented Extended Producer Responsibility regulations create for global packaging equipment manufacturers?
  • In what ways are sustainability audits and carbon reporting reshaping supplier qualification for packaging machinery?
  • Which operational trade-offs and cost factors influence CPG decisions when investing in sustainable packaging equipment?

Published by PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies (authors: Jorge Izquierdo; Rebecca Marquez; Grace Lee; Jenna Henderson) in June 2026. Based on an online quantitative survey of 97 respondents (75 end users—CPGs and co-packers/co-manufacturers; 22 OEMs and component suppliers) conducted March 10–April 1, 2026, and 11 virtual qualitative in-depth interviews (4 end users; 7 OEMs) conducted April 2–16, 2026.
